Fashion Art Toronto showcased runway fashion, films and installation art last week from April 21 – 25 at Daniels Spectrum in Regent Park. Also nicknamed, “alternative fashion week” or “FAT,” Arts & Fashion Week marked their 10th anniversary, a milestone in Canadian fashion. This year’s theme, #MADEINCANADA stretched over five days with daily inspiration generated from themes like the Cold North, The Group of Seven, Northern Lights, Global Village and the Great Wild.
FAT continues to emphasis and push the boundaries of Canadian fashion. This year, runway fashions were for sale at INLAND, a pop-up shop at the event. Some memorable designs this year from new and past designers.
Designers featured in photos above in no particular order: Vanika, Gavarcia, With Love Lingerie, Fiona Veronica F and Asphyxia. Memorable looks from this year’s runway are: a sheer black bodysuit from With Love Lingerie, The silver decal “eye patch” makeup shown on models from Fiona Veronica F and Vanika’s black-and-white striped boa dress.
Gavarcia had a royal theme, but the outfit that stood out most was the rose skirt with gold lamé bodice, as shown above. Fiona Veronica F had a gorgeous lacy grey and white wrap trench coat that oozes femininity.
What’s different about FAT from other fashion weeks is everyone’s openness. When you walk in the runway room, there is no judgement. Designers thrive on androgyny and the boundary between genders is blurred. It’s the kind of fashion show you leave feeling good about yourself and your experience. FAT mantra: go in with an open mind and enjoy the creativity behind Arts & Fashion Week.
